chapter six
Who thought up the idea to have a couples scavenger hunt for Allison and Daniel?
Oh, that’s right: she thought it up, planned it—with help from Seth, of course—and scheduled the whole stupid thing for the Saturday after Valentine’s Day.
Perfect. As in perfectly stupid.
Meghan dug her hand into the one-pound bag of Valentine conversation hearts, pulling out a handful of the pastel-colored candies as she followed her team down the sidewalk from the main parking lot of Garden of the Gods. Their goal: the Kissing Camels rock structure. One click of her digital camera and they could cross “the perfect Colorado Kiss” off the scavenger hunt list.
In the past two hours, they’d assembled the items for “the perfect breakfast in bed,” including the jug of real maple syrup Seth insisted on. Then they’d descended on REI and convinced the manager to let them pitch a backpacking tent in the sales area, complete with sleeping bags, a portable cookstove, and two chairs—“the perfect bed and breakfast” for the soon-to-be newlyweds. Allison’s co-worker Lori and her husband, Richard, staged “the perfect proposal” outside the Claire’s store in the mall, using an outlandish faux diamond ring. They indulged in much-needed caffeine before heading to Old Navy, where Seth, Richard, and Aunt Nita’s husband, James, balked at dressing “the perfect bride.” But the three women barred the doors and pointed the trio of men to their mannequin, which was prepped in a basic white sweater dress with bold pink stripes. Meghan held the digital camera steady—until Seth insisted on adding a black-and-white striped “hi-fi” hat so the bride could listen to romantic music on her iPod. Then Richard added an extra-large Broncos football T-shirt, because “obviously the perfect wife would be a football fan.”
The women wreaked their revenge on the “perfect groom” by ignoring all the men’s suggestions and clothing the mannequin in a coordinated outfit from the sale section—one that the manager then insisted on leaving displayed in his front window. Meghan responded to Seth’s whispered “Show-off!” by reminding him that men needed to listen to women when it came to clothes—and the sooner they learned that, the better.
Everywhere they went, there were reminders that Valentine’s Day had come and gone. Half-price candy. Markdowns on Valentine-themed clothes. She’d spent the day dedicated to couples—solo again. Gideon probably had a new girlfriend by now. And she was eating 75-percent-off candy hearts walking through Garden of the Gods.
Meghan tossed a yellow heart with the words “Call Me” into her mouth. Crunched so hard it slivered into bits of sugary sweetness.
“You okay?” Seth walked backward, waiting for her to catch up with the rest of the group.
“Huh?” Meghan looked up from her handful of pastel-colored candy. “Sure. Having a blast.”
“You just seem . . . subdued today.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? Are you implying I’m normally loud?”
Seth held up his hands. “I’m not implying anything—except that you’re quiet today.”
“I can be quiet.
